Meet our new Development Implementation & Monitoring Officer, Gemma Crossley

Meet our new Development Implementation & Monitoring Officer Gemma Crossley who joined our apT team of specialists in June. Find out more about how Gemma has made the transition from working in the travel industry to working for a Development Consultancy here in Telford.

Welcome to the team Gemma, can you tell us a bit about your background?

For the last 15 years I have been working in the travel industry for a well-known company starting as a sales consultant working my way up to Branch Manager. This is where I developed all my skills in customer service, leadership, honesty, integrity. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working in this industry and it gave me the opportunity to explore the world. During the last 18 months it has been tough within the industry and I wanted to play my part during the pandemic so I also supported my local testing centre as well as being an advisor on the 119 calls.

What lead you to this career?

I felt now due to the pandemic it was the right time to take the plunge and change career, and get my teeth stuck in to something totally different and push myself out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I also wanted a better work life balance which this have given me. I am eager to learn new skills and I knew I could adapt my transferrable skills in to something totally different. I wanted more flexibility, security, support and also the potential to further my career in the future.

What energises you?

What energises me the most is that I have taken on a new challenge, bringing opportunities to improve and positively shape the community where I work and live. I work alongside great people, who are willing to share their knowledge and passion for what they do and we have fun along the way. What we do can be quite complex so it’s important that we have personal connections, similar aims and ambitions and a positive happy team.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

I enjoy that every day is different and presents more opportunities for me to building my knowledge and gain more confidence.  I love working with people and this role brings contact with a wide variety of people on a daily basis whether that be developers, consultee’s or my colleagues.

What are your values that drive you to succeed?

Values that drive me to succeed are honesty, hardworking, passionate and accountability which fall hand in hand with the apT’s values.

What is your go to productivity trick?

I am a super organised person. I set myself daily goals of what I want to achieve and always have my trusty to do list. I also reflect at the end of each day, what went well, what didn’t go so well and what I need to change.

What do you enjoy when you are not at work?

I am relatively new to the area having only moved here in October last year so right now I am enjoying getting myself out and about exploring the area I now call home. I also feel so privileged to live so close to so many beautiful places including the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. I am yet to venture up the Wrekin – It’s next on my list!

Career aspirations?

For now I am happy to become the best I can be in my current role. I aim to develop and deliver an effective and valued service to our clients. As my role grows I will be broadening my horizons and becoming more involved with the full range of development services we deliver. Working for a Local Authority Team who support and encourage your personal development is a golden opportunity and I intend to make sure I make the most of my opportunities.
